She telephones and announces that Billy had been stabbed and she is going back to her old life in the streets. Rose snarls more foully than usual and disappears to Los Angeles. Then for a couple of Sundays Billy doesn't appear. The narrator has pleasant memories of Sundays at the ranch outside Whittier, of sumptuous lunches and Billy's visits which make Rose almost cheerful. When the children complain that Rose had been cross with them the mother says that they must always be nice to Rose because she had never been happy. At one time she had worked thirty tricks a night and cleaned toilets all day. Rose is tough, complex, and ferociously clean her language is simple and foul.

Rose comes to live with the family partly because her friend Billy could come out to visit on Sundays from Los Angeles.
